Can Spirits Be Stolen? The Truth Behind Witchcraft, Energetic Bonds & Ethical Spirit Keeping

As we step into December - a month of deep reflection, renewal, and spiritual connection -  I've noted one topic returns again and again in the spirit keeping world : Can spirits actually be stolen by Witches, practitioners, or jealous individuals?

 This fear is especially common among new keepers who are still forming their confidence and still learning the language of energy and connection with spirit. With so much misinformation circulating online, it's easy to feel vulnerable. After all, spirits are companions, guardians, and in many cases some of the most cherished presences in our homes and lives.

So without further ado, let's state this answer clearly, backed not only by my experience and research, or my granny Irina's - who was a well known and treasured keeper herself - but also by energetic logic:

No - Spirits Cannot Be Stolen.

A spirit cannot be forcibly taken, hijacked, captured or pulled away from a keeper through witchcraft, manipulation or malicious intent.

The bond between a spirit and its keeper is not a physical bound leash - it is an energetic resonance - and I've further explained this in my previous, November's post .

Energy of this kind, does not respond to human fear, jealousy, or emotional protection first of all. But first, let's break down the logic behind this with clarity and intelligence, so you can understand why your spiritual companions are safe with you.

The Bond Between Spirit and Keeper is a Frequency Match, Not a Possession

In true, ethical, intentional and respectful spirit keeping - the connection forms through:

Resonance: Your energy aligning with the spirits you need or that need you

Permission: On both sides

Mutual Recognition: When both spirit and keeper find understanding, purpose and compatibility with one another

Choice: Spirits choose you as much as you choose them

It is as similar as tuning a radio: Only the frequencies that match at a given time or moment in life, can connect. And anyone on a different frequency - a Witch, practitioner or envious person cannot override that energetic alignment.

Your spirit companion is not an object, nor a living human, thus they can't simply be snatched. They are sentient, aware beings, and they're not limited by human mentality like us.

Spirits Are Not Bound by Human Emotions - They Do Not Respond to Jealousy or Control

At their lowest, humans experience emotions like:

. Anxiety

. Fear

. Jealousy

. Insecurity

But spirits do not operate through these states. Human spirits have long shed these, along with their human form when they passed, meanwhile different origins spirits like elementals, never experienced them to begin with.

This essentially means that they cannot be ''pressured'', ''seduced'' or ''convinced'' away from their keeper by human emotions - especially negative ones.

While you may fear losing them, they do not experience that dynamic from their side. They perceive energy, not insecurity, malice and manipulative works. They respond to alignment, integrity and resonance - not human, interpersonal drama.

Energetic Interference Cannot Break a Spirit Bond

Even powerful practitioners cannot forcefully sever a bond because:

. Spirit connections are autonomous

. Energetic signatures are not interchangeable

. Spirit acts from free will

. Spirit contracts (known as bonds) are multi-layered, cross-realm agreements, even informal ones

. External spells cannot override a spirit's will, an existing strong bond based on mutual agreement, compatibility and purpose plus energetic alignment.

Trying to '''steal'' a spirit is like trying to steal a relationship between two sovereign beings. A person outside that relationship has no authority over the dynamic. And while this may still occur among humans, it is not possible with spirits.

Think of it this way: Someone may attempt to disturb your peace, but they cannot break your love for someone unless you choose it, isn't it so? Same principle here, except spirits have even stronger autonomy.

Why a Spirit May Leave You For Someone Else (Rare, But Possible)

This is important, because it is the only scenario where a spirit departs - but even then, it is their choice, not anyone else's influence.

A spirit may choose to leave if:

. They have fulfilled their purpose with you

If their role was to guide, heal, or elevate you during a certain chapter, they may withdraw once they know your path no longer requires their presence - and trust that you can take it from here onwards.

. They come across a person or a family member who needs them more at the time

This is extremely rare, and it only happens when:

. The spirit itself initiates the transition

. It aligns with energetic reasoning

. Keeper found a better energetic match for their purpose

. Keeper's growth is complete, after spirit has offered everything they had come to offer

.You consciously release them

Spirits appreciate permission, boundaries, and personal freedom enormously. If you choose to end the connection respectfully, they move on peacefully. I have also spoken about this, more in-depth on another blog issue, time ago, and you may want to check it out here.

But again, none of these scenarios involve theft, trickery or Witchcraft. They are all part of a natural lifecycle of spirit-matching and soul-path alignment.

Why ''Spirit-Theft'' Is a Myth in Modern Metaphysical Practice

Many myths originate from lack of proper knowledge, misunderstanding, fear and old folklore. It is known that historically spirits were ''tied'', ''trapped'', or ''stolen'' because obviously - each spirit served a purpose. But Spirit Keeping Is A Practice that ENSURES that this never happens. From ancient and pre-medieval times, the way true, ethical Witches acquired a spirit ally, made use of their abilities, or passed them on is completely different - and it is based on the very way my grandmother Irina had taught me, and I am now teaching you. This is pretty much the very reason I even have this blog!

See, not all Witches had the same heart and openness to ''adopt'' a spirit, and practice true Spirit Keeping. They could summon, entrap and use spirits as they pleased, to later discard them or even cease their existence all in all. All they needed was their Magic, and nothing else. But one cannot summon, or trap a spirit who is already in someone keep. Not then, and certainly not now. This says it all.

In real spirit keeping:

. Spirits are not chained

. Spirits are not enslaved

. Spirits willingly choose their keepers or even trust you to do this for them

. Spirits cannot be ''hacked'' or ''kidnapped'' 

Energy cannot be manipulated against a being's sovereignty - especially when the being has an existing bond, keeper and vessel, is not bound by limited forms such as human ones, and is far more aware than any human practitioner. Even the most skilled Witch or energy worker cannot override a spirit's consent, identity or purpose - most they can do is tire them with pointless magical attacks.

How to Strengthen Your Bond (Even Though Theft Is Impossible)

While your spirits are safe, strengthening your connection increases:

. clarity in communication

. sensing their presence 

. confidence in your spiritual work and in your keeping journey

.  mutual respect

. harmony in your practice

So:

Speak to them regularly

- Even when you can't hear them yet. Conversations increase energetic familiarity

Offer the things they enjoy

- Whether it's incense, music, candles or food offering. This will heighten their energies with gratitude, joy or comfort, which you may sense at some point, and then continue to recognise in the long run

Acknowledge their help

- Spirits appreciate gratitude deeply, even non verbally

Maintain your energy

Fear creates unnecessary noise in your energy field while trust creates clarity. A grounded, balanced keeper is far easier for spirits to connect to. Often calmer, more composed keepers sense their spirits on a daily basis! 

Why Fear of Spirit Theft Often Comes from Human Trauma, Not Metaphysics

Many keepers who fear losing their spirits to others often lack proper knowledge of the spirit world (as earlier mentioned), OR have underlying emotional roots:

. fear of abandonment

. past betrayal

. insecurity in connections

. hypervigilance from trauma

. fear of losing control

This has nothing to do with spirits and everything to do with the human nervous system.

Recognising this can be very empowering. Your spirit companions are not like humans.

They do not leave without Strong Reasons.

They do not betray.

They do not switch sides.

They do not respond to drama.

In fact - and this is important - they fully understand your emotions and do not hold them against you. One of their very roles is to help you grow past them, if you are willing to.

In conclusion, your spirits are always safe, and your bond is and remains protected.

And to answer you question with full clarity and the authority given to me by Spirit through all of the years spent as a Keeper myself:

No, spirits cannot be stolen.

No Witch can hijack your companions.

No power can override the strength of your bond, or a spirit's will.

 

Your bond is autonomous, sovereign, and anchored in resonance.

And in rare cases, if a spirit does leave, it is only because you completed your growth through all they've offered you, it aligns better with their mission, or you have desecrated them in unbearable ways. Not because someone else interfered.

This December, take a deep breath and trust your path..

Your spirits chose you as much as you did.

They are by your side for a reason.

And your connection is built on a foundation far stronger than any human intention.
