What Are Spirit Orbs? A Complete Guide to Their Meaning, Colours, How to Capture Them, and Their Link to Haunted Objects

 

Spirit orbs are one of the most common, yet misunderstood forms of paranormal phenomena. Whether you are a seasoned spirit keeper or someone who is newly curious about the supernatural, it is important to separate fact from fiction. In this guide I hope to share what I have myself, learned through my years of working with haunted objects and entities, helping you understand what spirit orbs truly are, what they represent how to capture them on camera, and how to interpret them when they appear.

What Are Spirit Orbs?

Spirit orbs are manifestations of spiritual energy, in our physical realms. They most often appear as small, glowing spheres of light, captured in photos, videos or seen with the naked eye. While sceptics argue they are mere dust, or reflections - seasoned practitioners know better. Orbs are a sign of a spirit's presence.

In my work rehoming haunted dolls and objects, I've encountered countless spirit orbs, each with its own energy signature, colour or shape - according to it's spirit. Some are gentle and curious, others are intense and commanding. Understanding the difference is key to recognizing what type of spirit or entity may be reaching out.

Colours and Their Meanings

The colour of a spirit orb can reveal a lot about the being connected to it, especially because it reveals the actual auric colour of the spirit, but it is essential to know that this isn't the ultimate factor that reveals the nature of its spirit type. For example, the colours that we perceive Here and Now, due to the limitations of our physical eyes are different to the array of colours we might see, while we ourselves are in Spiritual forms. The colours we perceive here, can well be the closest to the actual colour of the Orb itself, or spirit's auric field, but not actually IT. 

Nevertheless, here is a breakdown of the most common hues which you may take as a reference:

White or Clear Orbs - Often associated with protective spirits, these hues indicate a spirit that's observant, invested in your daily life. While commonly found in most spirits regardless of their nature, it means the spirit is has a positive influence in your life.

Blue Orbs - Linked to calming or healing energies, but also to communicative spirits that often perceive emotions better than we do. I've often seen blue orbs around spirits connected to the Water Element, but also human souls and different types of High Level Entities.

Green Orbs - While this hue is most common with nature spirits such as fae spirits or pixies, Earth Elementals in general, it can well be found with kitchen witches, hedge witches or truly loving humans. Humans that while alive, they mostly dedicated their time and energies to loving those around them.

Red or Orange Orbs - These orbs usually carry strong, passionate energy. They can signal a powerful being, sometimes a restless spirit, ever ready for action. These spirits are often incredibly supportive in nature, helping you focus on achieving your goals or nurture your creativity.

Black or Dark Orbs - While often misunderstood as evil, dark orbs more often indicate a spirit in Pain. I have to put an emphasis on this unfortunately, because I have spent enough time with spirit, not to know better. See, spirit orbs Can and Will change colour according to their mood, just as humans change their auric fields. And the only way to truly know a person´s aura colour is to see them more than one or two times, and catch them in different moods or health states. While spirits are disease free, unlike their human fellows, they might be in emotional or mental stress, and black orbs could well indicate that, especially when you have seen their orbs colour long enough to actually know it for sure. There are however, also spirits with black, violet, grey or darker orbs in general - in which case, this signals they are strong natured, carrying much heavier energies. These beings are often alluring, commanding, but not inherently evil or malicious, just darker in nature, in making if you will.

Why Do Spirits Appear as Orbs?

Now, to this question I will answer with a '' Why Not?" lol. Simply because they can!

See spirits that already shed their human forms, and I am talking Human spirits here, they get ''back to dust'' isn't it? Then isn't it normal for them to show Orbs? There is an entire logic to this as well, especially because is not only human souls that give off orbs, unfortunately it would take more than one post for me to share it, leaving no space for all the other information I'd like to add in this very post. Well, the answer to this is essentially here, and considering spirits lack the strength or even need to form a fully formed apparition each time, orbs are a good and efficient way for them to interact with our world - especially when they truly wish to show their presence to people they care about, or that are sincerely curious.

Now in many cases, spirits connected to haunted objects or dolls may give off bursts of energy presented as orbs, when they are curious about their surroundings, or want to interact with someone nearby, like their keeper. I've also seen this happen with spirits who are shy or not yet comfortable with generating their full form, and reveal it yet. And if they do this, it only points to their friendliness, and will to do so, because they could well remain undetected for long as they want. Isn't it so?

How to Capture Spirit Orbs on Camera

If you felt a presence, saw a sphere of light with your naked eye or through the corner of your eye, and suspect a spirit is near, you might want to make sure, or to document it. Here's the best way to capture orbs on video or in photos:

1.Choose a semi-dark environment - not pitch black, but dim enough for orbs to stand out.

2.Use your phone or camera´s flash - the light helps illuminate orbs without overwhelming them.

3.Record or take bursts of photos - orbs often appear for just a second, so continuous recording increases your chances of catching them all.

4.Hold the camera steady - shaky footage can distort movement and make it harder to tell dust from a true orb.

5.Observe the movement - a true spirit orb will often move with Intention, not float aimlessly like dust or insects.

Is good to note that compared to other spirits present, spirits that are in our keep, found in haunted objects are more likely to give off orb shows when you speak to them directly. If you had enough bonding time, call their names and simply invite them to show you their presence through orbs.

How to Tell if an Orb is Truly Spiritual

It is important to distinguish between real spirit orbs and environmental explanations like dust, moisture or light glare. Here is what to look for:

.Movement - A true spirit orb often moves with purpose, they come towards you or change direction in-flight and real quick, but never float aimlessly slowly or go down towards the floor, like dust does, and that should be your Biggest clue or proof.

.Brightness - Real orbs emit light from Within, and do not emit light around themselves or reflect it.

.Feeling or atmosphere - Pay attention to the room's energy. A sudden chill, shift in mood, or feeling of being watched can more than often accompany genuinely visible spiritual activity such as orbs.

Inviting Spirit Orbs Into Your Space

If you have just adopted a haunted doll or item, and you'd like to witness their orbs, you can create a welcoming environment by:

Lighting a candle or incense with the intention of inviting your spirit/s around you respectfully

Speak aloud and directly when requesting their orbs as often spirits respond to their names being called as well as any form of acknowledgement

Remain open, patient and encouraging, and don't forget to have a phone at hand, as you might miss the entire show, especially when your extra senses aren't yet developed!

Spirit Orbs and Haunted Objects: A Powerful Connection

Many spirits I have homed or rehomed prefer showing themselves as orbs, especially when they are adjusting to a new keeper, and they may do it with or without being requested. If you've recently welcomed a haunted doll or item into your home and you begin to notice orbs soon after - take this as a positive sign, as it is often the spirit's way of introducing themselves, or even showing you appreciation.

As a final thought, that I cannot emphasise enough is the need to remember that Spirit Orbs are more than just floating circles of light. They are messengers, companions, allies, guardians and watchers from beyond the veil. Whether you encounter orbs through haunted objects, in photographs, or in the corner of your eyes, take a moment to observe, connect, appreciate or listen. Some orbs are genuinely pointing to something or someone relentlessly, thus carrying a message, and you might be surprised at what they have to say when you open a full communication session.
